It was a beautiful day. The sun was high in the sky, sending tendrils of heat to the cats down below it. Very few clouds dotted the pure blue sky, being pushed along by a gentle wind that practically sang in Ivybreeze's ears. The other Clans couldn't understand, didn't even try to understand, how WindClan could live through the height of greenleaf with no shade in their territory. Ivybreeze never understood why they wanted trees. In her opinion, all trees did was block the wind. On WindClan territory, where there was only one tree, the wind ran as wild and free and untamed as the cats that took their name from it.
Normally on days like this, Ivybreeze would be everywhere at once. She would be hunting, on border patrol, helping the apprentices clean the dens, pestering her kits (though they were apprentices now, they would always be her kits), basically being a general nuisance. Today, though, she didn't feel like it.
She trudged toward the Everblossom Tree with her head low and her tail in the ground. Sadness pulsed beneath her light brown pelt, as strong and steady as her heart beat. Her paws knew the way without her paying attention. The lone tree in WindClan territory was the one place where she couldn't hide behind a cheery smile, the one place where she couldn't escape her past.
As Ivybreeze approached the silver-barked tree, her throat tightened. She raised her paw with claws unsheathed and placed it on the claw-marks already made. They were a perfect match. Of course, they'd have to be, since she was the one that made them. Her amber-green eyes fell on the other pair of claws, and a few silent tears fell down her face.
They were made by Redwhisker. This was where they'd confessed their love for each other. "Redwhisker... Where are you, my love?" she whispered, and that's when the floodgates opened. Her shoulders shook with her sobs, but she refused to make a sound. She refused to let her Clanmates know how much she was hurting.
